Q: What is the Computer Trading Post?
A: Welcome to The Computer Trading Post. Since 1984, the Computer Trading Network has provided computer parts and equipment trading opportunities to after-market computer dealers. Our extensive database enables dealer-to-dealer trading to over 1,800 European, Canadian, and US computer dealers on the network via the internet. Currently there are over 750,000 listings of used computer parts and equipment with over 2,800 manufacturers represented and more added each day! Our trading services and products enable more trading opportunities and maximum inventory exposure for computer dealers and third party maintenance companies looking to locate hard-to-find parts, sell excess inventory, and quickly find trading partners for almost any type of computer equipment.

Q: Do you buy or sell equipment?
A: CTP is an information and trading service for computer dealers. We do not buy or sell equipment for a business, but whenever we need any equipment for our operations, the first place we look is on the network.

Q: What is the best way to buy or sell inventory?
A: Contact several CTP dealers and get quotes. You will find Dealers listed by state in our Dealer Directory.

Q: How do I login as a subscriber?
A: Click the Log In link, located in the top right-hand portion of the page. You must be given a userid and password by the Help Desk.

Q: Why does the CTP require subscribers to have Javascript enabled?
A: It is necessary for adding and editing listings to the database…

Q: Why does the CTP require cookies?
A: We store a single number on your PC to keep track of your last messages read, your preferences for viewing the the database, etc. We do not gather any information from your PC.


About browsers . . .    Top

Q: Which versions of which browsers work best with the CTP website?
A: For public viewing, NS 3 and above or IE 3 or above. For subscribers, NS 4 or above or IE 4 or above.

Q: Does the CTP recommend a particular browser?
A: Yes, we recommend Microsoft Internet Explorer 4.0 or higher.

Q: How do I enable cookies on my browser?
A: It seems that each version of browsers out there have a slightly different way to enable cookies. The best way, is to consult the HELP that your browser provides. That said, here are the instructions for some of the common versions:
  • Netscape 3.04, Options, Network Preferences, and click "accepting a cookie"
  • Netscape 4.0+, Edit, Preferences, Advanced, Cookies, click "Accept all cookies"
  • IE 4.0, View, Internet Options, Advanced, Under security/cookies, click "always accept cookies"
  • IE 5+ , Tools, Internet Options, Security, Custom Level, Enable Cookies and enable session level cookies also.

Q: How do I make sure Javascript is enabled on my browser?
A: Most browsers will have Javascript enabled by default, but to check to see if it is enabled:

For Microsoft Internet Explorer 5.0:

  • From the main menu, select "Tools", then "Internet Options"
  • Click on the "Security" Tab.
  • Click on the "Internet" globe, then click on the "Custom Levels" button
  • Scroll to "Active Scripting" under "Scripting"
  • Make sure "Enable" is selected.
  • Click "OK" until you return to the browser.
For Microsoft Internet Explorer 4.0:
  • From the main menu, select "View", then "Internet options"
  • Click on the "Security Tab"
  • Select "Custom" for the "Internet Zone", then the "Settings" button.
  • Scroll to "Active Scripting" under "Scripting"
  • Make sure "Enable" is selected.
  • Click "OK" until you return to the browser.
For Netscape 3.0:
  • From the main menu, select "Options" then "Network Preferences".
  • Ensure that "JavaScript Enabled" is checked on the Lanugage tab.
For Netscape 4.0:
  • Select "Edit" from the main menu, then "Preferences"
  • Under "Advanced", ensure that "Enable JavaScript" is checked.

Q: What is the recommend screen resolution and color depth for working with the CTP-Internet?
A: The minimum screen resolution is 800 x 600 and the minimum color depth is 256 colors. You may use higher resolutions and depths if your hardware can support it.

Q: Why do I have so many windows open at the same time?
A: When you perform functions on the CTP-Internet like editing a listing, a separate window is opened. After you are finished, you may close these windows and still have the main CTP browser window open. Several windows may be left open if you wish to refer back to information in those windows. It would be advisable to not leave more than 4 or 5 windows open to avoid using too much PC memory.


About Broadcast E-Mail . . .    Top

Q: I really like the Broadcast Email feature, but it clutters up my personal mailbox. Is there a way around this?
A: Yes! There are actually 2 ways to receive Broadcast E-mail without impacting your main mailbox.
  1. Choose to receive DIGEST DELIVERY only. This delivery method consists of a single email message delivered at the end of the day containing a compilation of the entire day's’ worth of Broadcast E-mail messages from the CTP Member List. You can still view the daily list traffic via the WWW. To change to Digest only, check Digest Delivery under the "Broadcast Email-email settings-Delivery" tab. Then un-check Real-Time Delivery.
  2. Choose to filter Broadcast E-mail by creating a separate folder in your mail client for incoming list traffic. Click here for Hints.

A: Yes. Names, addresses, phone numbers, emails, website URL's of members of computertradingpost.com are available to authenticated members of the computertradingpost.com network. computertradingpost.com does offer an equipment search which may reveal a listing dealers name to the public.
